Fruit skewers and Coconut Yogurt dip

by Helene Dsouza on April 4, 2012

While my native town in Europe is still in snow, we here in Goa are experiencing an early heat wave.  We are left to bare continues stickiness, unbearing sun and unreal weather conditions. I love the sun and warmth but this is a living hell which I dislike, its so humid, I am steaming alive! That of course is a total appetite killer, heavy food is out of question. What is needed are refreshing fruits, salads, cold dishes, some liquid for the body and health. Imagine you are on the beach, thinking a sea bath will cool you down a bit, helping you to survive the beating summer heat. Now imagine some sexy fruit treats with a cooling yogurt dip waiting for you when you come out of the water. One bite and you are in heaven, released from the torture for the moment…

How many of you now wished that badly to happen? Even I would enjoy the heat with a nice fruit surprise and that’s why I came up with the idea of making fruit skewers and a fitting dip. Simple fruit salads are nice too but I am having every day a fruit salad, a change was required! The one who attacked it and finished it is my husband, he loved the idea since he is suffering more in the heat. Nobody can resist such gorgeous skewers, well… look at them, aren’t they pretty for the eye?

Fruits alone don’t make it a dish worthwhile to write about, something special was needed. Happily I went to buy some yogurt because I had an ingenious idea of combining the right ingredients together to a awesome dip. It is special because I added tender Coconut, from our home grown coconuts, and Jaggery which is a natural sweetener. Jaggery reminds me of Brown Sugar, because of the texture and taste. It has in my opinion more characteristic natural flavours, that’s why I ll rather use jaggery then plain white sugar.

You will find that the fruit treat is quick and simple to make. It looks great too if you order the fruits color wise, so I d say its a perfect dessert for guests. A dip into the coconut yogurt and you find yourself imaginating you are in paradise. If you are looking exactly for that, then go ahead and try it out, you will see what I mean. ;)

YUM! I LOVE fruit skewers but you’ve once again put a great twist on it. Coconut and jaggery?! Yummy yummy :) I used to love eating my yogurt rice with a tiny piece of jaggery, so this would be just terrific!

Love these skewers & I’m so jealous of your coconut tree! That must be awesome to be able to grab a coconut whenever you fancy… And you’re right, this fruit & dip would be so refreshing on a hot day…

Its awesome.. but its not so easy to get a coconut. u need a professional climber who comes once in a month to remove. Once the coconut is detached from the tree it gets hard and later spoiled, resulting in a sponge growing inside which could grow into a new tree.

Firstly – so many “yays” :) Thanks Helene! You made my day by telling me this – I can’t wait to receive it!!

Secondly, I love fruit skewers – they serve it as a desert at a nearby restaurant, though with a chocolate sauce. I always find the chocolate is too rich after a big meal. I ordered fruit for a reason after all… I imagine it must be much lighter with coconut and yoghurt dip – I’m going to try this myself next time. One tip though, maybe you’ll find it useful – I guess it won’t work so well on certain fruits, but if you’re making a skewer with only pineapple for example, I find it really good if you sprinkle sugar on and grill/broil it lightly, just enough to caramelise the sugar. I find pineapple *really* acidic – this warms it up a bit, as well as giving it a bit of extra sweetness, and really makes it even more delicious!

Hi chalres. your welcome! I am glad I was able to make your day with the announcment. =D

Yes its much lighter, which is required in the heat. The curd cooles your body from inside, the fruits refresh you and give you valuable nutrients and the coconut is filled with proteins. Its a great combination for your systems health.

I was actualy considering the option of grilling the fruits a bit, but the thought of heat alone made me feel too hot. It defenetly tastes yumm when the pineapple is grilled. thats why I enjoy pizza with pineapple. XD

Hi Helene,
I love this idea of putting the fruit on a skewer like a kebab. The sauce with it aounds so cool and refreshing. I cannot wait to make this for my little one. She will love it.

I have been to Goa in summer and I totally agree with you , the heat is unbearable.

I love the idea of fruit skewers! Served with the coconut yogurt they remind me of my coconut cream with peaches. I can already imagine them on a Summer party. Even those on diet would go crazy for such a dessert.
I have recently seen Jaggery here, I must buy it and taste the difference.

An early heatwave does make for a very long summer.  Here in Texas it does get unbearable, even to the point where you do not even want to eat.  The cold fruit kabobs however, would be welcome in any climate.  Also the dip looks like a great pairing.  Delicious post!
