When the days get hotter, and you are hosting some friend, make these refreshing fruit skewers.
Colorful and inviting, they are a fun way to enjoy a get-together.
Pick a set of colorful fresh fruits, cut them into chunks, skewer them and serve them with my coconut yogurt dip as a snack or dessert.
Attention: This dish is not for children! Kids shouldn't be served skewers. This is an adult only dish.
Ingredients
When I came up with this recipe in 2012, I had just witnessed one of the hottest summers in Goa, India.
The scorching heat and bounty of fruits is the reason this fruity dessert or snack are a thing.
You will need the following ingredients to make this from scratch.
For the Skewers:
- Fresh Fruits — Fruits in the color of the rainbow. See below for recommendations as per color.
- Wooden Skewers
For the Dip:
- Coconut — If you can get a whole coconut and break it open to use the white coconut flesh, do that. Otherwise, you may use pre-cut coconut chunks.
- Sweetener — Here I like to use natural sugars such as South Asian Jaggery, Latin American Panela sugar or simply honey. I like the 24 Mantra Organic Jaggery Powder.
- Plain Yogurt — I recommend Greek Yogurt as it is thicker and results in a creamier consistency. You can also use Skyr (Iceland yogurt) or Bulgarian yogurt. Regular yogurt will be much thinner, but if that is all what you can get, use that or make French yogurt at home.
Colorful Fruit Options
To create the fun rainbow effect, pick fruits in the color of the rainbow.
That means, you need to pick for each color of a fruit. Here are for every color of a fruit type that you can use. That way, you can mix and match your preferred fruits.
Green | Grapes, Kiwi, Honeydew Melon, Starfruit. |
White | Banana, White Dragon Fruit, Apple, Pear, Guava, Rambutan. |
Yellow | Pineapple, Jackfruit, Cape Gooseberry. |
Orange | Papaya, Orange or Mandarin, Mango, Apricot, Cantaloupe. |
Red/Pink | Strawberry, Pink Dragon Fruit, Red Watermelon, Cherry. |
Some fruits come in various colors. For example, star fruits can be yellow or green, and mangoes appear in all yellow or deep orange shades.
Another fun idea is to get fruits that are oddly naturally colored. For example, Apples where the fruit flesh is pink (I.e. Pink Pearl) instead of white, yellow watermelon and white strawberries.
Cut them so that your guests don't recognize the fruit and make them guess the fruits.

Serving Instructions
Prepare the fruit skewers as per recipe instructions and keep the dip ready.
I usually make these hours before my guests, but on the same day because the fruits should remain fresh.
The skewers can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container (if they fit in) or on a plate covered with a cling film.
Keep the dip in a bowl with a cling film wrapped around too.
Serve the fruit skewers cooled with the cold coconut yogurt dip. The idea is to dip the fruits in the creamy coconut-flavored dip.
Your guests will love it as a dessert after a BBQ meal or as an afternoon snack on a hot sunny day.

The coconut yogurt dip sounds fantastic. A healthier alternative to the usual fruit dips!

I don't mind the heat but humidity is hard to live with. What gorgeous looking fruit skewers and I haven't tried a coconut and jaggery dip so will have to try this. Have a wonderful Easter xx
